Apple back to the top with new Iphone 3G S.
The 3G S will also be able to ride on AT&T’s faster It’s not much, but when you apply that to the entire platform, you get a more satisfying experience. For instance, I loaded up the game Enigmo in about 10 seconds on the 3G S compared with about 13 seconds on the iPhone 3G. That means applications launch more quickly and some can operate with a little more zip. It’s got a faster processor (reportedly a 600 MHz CPU compared with a 412 MHz chip in the 3G), double the RAM and a better graphics chip.
As I mentioned, the 3G S is built for speed. You need to be in a quieter area to pull this off consistently, but when it works, it’s pretty sweet. You can call people from your contacts or dial by number by just saying, “Call, Steve Jobs mobile.” But the cool thing is you can control your iPod with voice, too, so you can say, “Play artist Kanye West,” or “Play playlist workout.” You can also ask what song is playing or have the Genius feature on your iPod call up similar songs. Apple has been slow in including this but the finished product called Voice Command exceeds almost anything else available. The hardware also features for the first time voice commands, which many phones include for voice dialing.
Just click on your location button twice and you see which way you’re headed. But more importantly, you can apply the compass to Google Maps, so you can see where you’re facing on the map. For now, you can launch the stand-alone compass app and locate north. The feature should show up in a bunch of new apps from developers.
Apple has thrown in a digital compass to help with map functions and location. You can do a one-touch upload to YouTube or your MobileMe account. This is the kind of touch that Apple is known for. The thing that got me was the ability to edit and trim videos by just grabbing the ends of a laid out video reel and adjusting where your clip starts and stops. There’s also a macro mode that’s not great but adds some functionality.
The iPhone 3G S sports an improved 3-megapixel camera that shoots video, features auto focus, and allows you to adjust the focus, exposure and white balance by tapping on objects in the screen. Let’s start with the actual improvements only found in the 3G S and expand out to the iPhone OS 3.0 upgrades. But if your contract is expiring or even if it’s not, there are a lot of reasons to make the jump to the iPhone 3G S, which sells for $199 and $299 for 16-GB and 32-GB versions. The iPhone OS 3.0 improvements alone might be enough to satisfy many existing iPhone and iPhone 3G users. The improvements don’t quite blow your hair back on the first pass, but coupled with the new iPhone OS 3.0 software upgrade, they cement the iPhone’s status as the best smart phone experience available.
The iPhone 3G S (the S stands for speed) is a more subtle upgrade compared with last year’s launch of the 3G. Check on all of them. Multimedia messaging? Zippier performance? Better battery life?
Voice dialing? Video recording? Images The new Apple iPhone 3G S, which went on sale Friday, finally addresses some of the last flaws and holes that have dogged the platform. The follow-up last year added 3G high-speed networking and GPS, but still left room for some basic improvements. The iPhone was a stunner from day one, but it glossed over some obvious omissions.
